Ecological Planning and Design

Ecological planning and design (EPD) is a planning and design approach that incorporates the science of ecology into creating semi-natural and urban environments. Philosophically, it has a “humans are part of nature” worldview rather than being separated from it. People’s dominion over nature is that of the “good steward” who upkeeps the inherited land for generations to come. EPD respects the history of the land and the tradition of the people as it may drives the desired outcomes for communities that will also lead of taking ownership of design and planning solutions.

EPD approaches planning and design challenges holistically. It looks at the built and natural environment as an interconnected complex system that is always evolving and changing. Any questions directed to us will be analyzed comprehensively. Requested planning and design needs will be assessed individually through the involvement of stakeholders. Solutions will be based upon the most up to date scientific knowledge, the history of the land, the vision and goals of the stakeholders.

We seek planning and design solutions that will integrate into the built and natural system across multiple scales (local, regional).

Gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) on a Gregg’s mist flower (Conoclinium greggii), College Station, Texas. This mist flower was planted in a pot and served as a patch for several butterfly species like the gulf fritillary, the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and the queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus). Ecological design is fun and the result is beautiful and beneficial. Photo by Dr. Gitta M. Pap. 2023.
